Scrum Master to Product Owner: Is it a smart career move?

You are currently viewing Scrum Master to Product Owner: Is it a smart career move?

Last month, during one of my coaching sessions, a Scrum Master from a top tech company said this to me:

‘I love enabling the team. But I want to influence real product decisions, not just protect the process.’

For Scrum Masters, the Product Owner career path often becomes a tempting, but it is a confusing option.

So let us talk about it honestly .

Scrum Masters may face these issues:

  • Feeling stuck in a team enablement role with limited influence on business decisions.
  • Being treated as someone who enforces ceremonies, not as a strategic partner.
  • Limited exposure to product thinking, even though you are deeply involved in delivery.
  • Being invisible to leadership because your impact is not easily quantifiable.

So is moving to Product Owner role a smart career move?

Yes, if it is done for the right reasons.

No, if it is driven only by frustration.

If your heart is leaning toward impact, visibility, and ownership,

then here is what you must equip yourself with.

  • Develop strong product thinking: Customer empathy, market understanding, business models, value mapping.
  • Learn prioritization frameworkslike WSJF, MoSCoW, Cost of Delay, and real ROI-driven decision making.
  • Improve stakeholder influencing skills: POs win through communication, negotiation, and alignment.
  • Build data-driven decision habits: Metrics like product health, adoption, retention, revenue impact.
  • Showcase product contributions even in your current SM role (problem discovery, customer insights, experiment facilitation, etc.)

A Scrum Master who deeply understands product value, becomes a future-ready PO

Transitioning from Scrum Master to Product Owner is not a simple role switch, it is a mindset evolution.

You go from protecting the team to shaping the product.

From facilitating to deciding.

And yes, it can be a smart, strategic, and fulfilling move, if you prepare intentionally.
